To mark the friendship between Japan and Canada, the City of Hamilton was gifted with sakura (Japanese cherry trees ) which were planted at Bay Front and McQueston Parks. The early blossoming sakura are symbols of peace and friendship.

Hamilton has been twinned with Fukuyama since 1975, and with amalgamation has gained a second Japanese twin city, Kaga, which is the twin of Dundas.
