Congratulations
to a Finalist for the World Citizenship Award for 2005
Hamilton, ON – April 6, 2005
The Hamilton Mundialization Committee is pleased to
recognize Khursheed Ahmed as a finalist for this year’s
World Citizenship Award. Khursheed Ahmed, a resident
of the City of Hamilton, was nominated for his active
involvement in various community and international groups
working for international peace.
(Note: Although not selected as this year’s recipient,
he is eligible to be re-nominated in the future.)
Dr. Ahmed has worked in the Faculty of Health Sciences
at McMaster for 28 years, and holds the position of
Manager of Computer Services and Assistance Professor
in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. It has been
said that his true passion is international health.
He has traveled frequently to developing countries such
as Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, Egypt, Malaysia and Indonesia
to train medical students and researchers in the use
of emerging information technology, and setting up computer
infrastructure at various universities.
For 22 years Dr. Khursheed Ahmed has been actively
involved in various peace and community groups, notably
the Hamilton Chapter of Physicians for Global Survival.
This group is dedicated to the elimination of nuclear
weapons and the promotion of non-violent conflict resolution.
He and his wife, Maroussia, have been hosting PGS chapter
meetings in their home for over 10 years, helping to
nurture the promotion of peace in a quiet manner. He
has also been involved with Project Ploughshares.
Dr. Ahmed has been an active participant in the Annual
Gandhi Peace Festival in Hamilton, editing the Gandhi
Peace Booklet, managing the website, and helping with
planning various events. He and his family have had
an open door policy to students, especially overseas
students and refugees, helping them to settle in the
community, and providing logistics and moral support.
It was for his ongoing practice of the qualities of
a World Citizen that Khursheed Ahmed was nominated.
His tireless efforts have contributed to the development
of knowledge, respect and peace, both in Hamilton as
well as worldwide. We congratulate him on being named
a finalist for the World Citizenship Award for 2005.
