Dear Solomon Ngan
It is often said that humanity never seems to learn
about the real costs of war and violence. In less than
twenty four months two wars have been fought, and negative
consequences have been felt here in Hamilton. We feel
it is pertinent to ask: What have we learned? and What
are we going to do about it?
In an attempt to find informed answers, the Hamilton
Culture of Peace Network is inviting your group to send
one or two representatives to an exploratory discussion
evening on October 22nd. While we would want the evening
to be as open as possible we are not proposing a large
public gathering. Our invitations are being limited
to those groups and individuals we believe to be seriously
interested in non-violence. Unfortunately a single evening
will not be sufficient to lead to any kind of joint
action. We are therefore hoping that some participants
will agree to join an informal alliance which would
meet 5 or 6 times per year for self-education, discussion,
and possible joint action - perhaps somewhat like the
Hamilton Disarmament Coalition of some years ago.
Graeme MacQueen has consented to act as facilitator
on October 22nd. We hope you will find the evening stimulating
and informative. We look forward to hearing your views
and learning more about each other's work and dreams.
One of our long-term visions is the eventual establishment
in this city of some more permanent body or institution
which could address the social wastage caused by war
and violence whether in our community or elsewhere.
The October meeting will be held in the Unitarian Church,
170 Dundurn St. South, Hamilton, at 7-30 p.m. Please
discuss this matter at your next meeting, and give us
your reactions by phone at (905) 527-0470 or email by
October 17. If you would like to make suggestions or
add a name or group we have omitted from the list attached
to this letter, please let us know.
In peace.
