"They
give a sense they live what they preach"
Joy and Gary Warner are working
now to make Hamilton more welcoming to immigrants. |
Once the ideas start flowing, it's hard to tell who's
saying what. Joy Warner picks up where her husband of
35 years, Gary, leaves off. Then he adds another point
and they continue on a different path.
Their passion, what sparks them in this spirited discussion,
is the culture of peace they've spent their working lives
trying to foster. "A world free of racism,"
Joy said. "Free of poverty," Gary adds.
And even though there will always be disputes, Joy acknowledged,
a world ''where we solve them nonviolently."
Gary is director of McMaster University's arts and science
program, which selects 60 students a year with averages
of 90 per cent or more to study in a gifted program. He's
also chair of the working committee of Strengthening Hamilton's
Community, which aims to make us more inclusive and peaceful.
Joy is the national social justice co-ordinator of the
Spiritans Catholic religious congregation and has served
as national chair of the Canadian Voice of Women for Peace.
The couple was honoured last night with a World Citizenship
Award from the Hamilton Mundialization Committee. It has
twinned Hamilton with nine cities around the world to
promote peace and understanding.
The Warners were among eight individuals and groups nominated.
Judges received two independent nominations for the couple.
One was from McMaster professor John Browning, the other
from McMaster professor Maroussia Ahmed. "They
have been consistent, tireless role models," Ahmed
said. "They give a sense of hope and a sense they
live what they preach."
Both Warners are passionate about the possibilities for
Strengthening Hamilton's Community to help the city improve
as a welcoming home for immigrants. "There
are lots of issues that do not surface. A lot of people
who are affected 'don't have a voice," Gary said.
"There are huge issues around employment."
“And housing," Joy said.
And then they begin their talking over each other again,
ideas spilling out, award forgotten.
