Hamilton Committee
WHAT IS MUNDIALIZATION
Mundialization is one of the oldest of municipal peace activities. The word is derived from the Latin word “mundus” meaning “world”. It is an act whereby City Council declares its city to be a “world city”, interdependent with other communities worldwide. It involves the linking or twinning of cities around the world, in the belief that future peace and progress are dependent on co-operation, goodwill and understanding.

Linkages take place not only at the municipal government level but also at the citizen level. Mundialization fosters people-to-people linkages and friendships, to further peace, justice and understanding.

PURPOSE
  • To promote Hamilton as “A World (Mundialized) City” dedicated to global awareness, international co-operation and world law.
  • To further the work of the United Nations through publicity and education and to have the United Nations flag flown with the Canadian flag from City Hall at all times.
  • To undertake twinning programs in international cooperation with like-minded municipalities in this and other countries to foster an understanding of the increasing interdependence of the municipalities, peoples and countries of the world.
  • To involve Hamilton citizens of different cultures, especially those from the countries of our sister communities, to share in our multicultural programs.
  • To include representatives from City Council in the Committee for implementing the above programs.
HAMILTON COMMITTEE
The Hamilton Mundialization Committee is a council mandated advisory committee of the City of Hamilton. The Committee serves to facilitate and support peace initiatives and the twinning relationships between Hamilton and its nine twin-cities around the world. Its purpose is to assist City Council in implementing its Mundialization resolution.
On May 8, 1968, the City of Hamilton, by a resolution of Council, and witnessed by the Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations, was declared a World (mundialized) City.

The Mayor, the late Victor Copps, called upon the citizens of Hamilton to “pledge their efforts to the establishment of peace and to use all possible resources for the betterment of mankind”
